Our Reference librarians are available to answer questions and provide research guidance in person, by telephone, fax, email and through the library’s website. Cardholders can sign up to attend free computer classes. Patrons are also invited to have a 20 minute “reference by appointment” session for in-depth inquiries. The department hosts eighteen Internet terminals, including four workstations with scanners. The library offers a growing number of databases for research into business, consumer, educational and scholarly topics. Most of these are available via remote access from your home using your library card number as a password.
Along with a rich collection of books, we provide many entertaining and educational programs for young people and their parents through our Youth Services Department. These include: storytimes, crafts, afterschool activities, reading clubs, and special events throughout the year. Our staff work closely with area schools and provide special services for teachers. Internet terminals, with optional filtering, are available for children. PCs are available with games and educational databases. We have a teen area called The Loft and our Teen Advisory Board offers many activities and opportunities for older students.
Whether you are looking for musical scores, CDs, CD-ROMs, Wii or other games, DVDs, videogames or audiobooks, we can find it for you in our Multimedia Department. You can bring a music selection to our Listening Center, check out special earphones and then listen to your favorite music as you wander throughout the library. The department also organizes monthly movies and concert events.
Located on the third floor with a beautiful overlook of the North Branch of the Chicago River, Reader Services is an ideal place to browse for fiction or just sit and read while enjoying the view. The department hosts special events, lectures, book discussions, workshops, classes, and summer and winter reading clubs for adults. Reader Services has a computer and other equipment for people with low vision. Contact Reader Services if you want to reserve a meeting room or the auditorium.
