Last season's runners-up Marseille, picked up their second straight Ligue 1 victory after a slump of seven matches without winning as they defeated Ajaccio 3-1 on Friday in Corsica. Dimitri Payet gave Elie Baup's men the ideal start with a 27th minute opener, only for Grenddy Perozo to level terms four minutes later. Former France international Andre-Pierre Gignac celebrated his recall to the side by restoring the visitors' lead six minutes before half-time before Florian Thauvin wrapped up maximum points on 58 minutes as Marseille climbed to fourth. Baup, who has seen his struggling outfit eliminated from Champions League action with two games to play in the group phase, received a welcome tonic following the international break as the Velodrome giants moved one point above Nantes.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghanistan's president on Friday rebuffed American demands that he sign a security pact allowing U.S. forces to stay in the country for another decade, while the U.S. defense secretary warned that planning for a post-2014 military presence may be jeopardized if the deal isn't finalized by the end of the year.
CAIRO (AP) — Clashes erupted Friday as thousands of supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood around Egypt held protests marking the passage of 100 days since the start of a bloody crackdown against them in the wake of the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. The violence left two dead including a 10-year-old boy.
Nico Rosberg made the most of a limited supply of tyres on Friday when he topped the times for Mercedes in both free practice sessions for Sunday's Brazilian Grand Prix. The 28-year-old German, who had led a Mercedes one-two ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton in the morning, was fastest again, outpacing both Red Bulls in the final minutes of another rain-hit session in the afternoon. For Rosberg it was confirmation of his merit among the top drivers, many of whom were left frustrated by the lack of available suitable Pirelli tyres in the conditions. You would expect the Red Bull to be quicker anyway but I don't know how much fuel they were running.
