The Caldecott Medal, awarded annually to an illustrator for the most distinguished American picture book, was announced in January. The winning illustrator is Chris Raschka for his book A Ball for Daisy. When Daisy's ball is accidentally destroyed by another dog in the park, Daisy's owner tries to comfort her. When Daisy and owner return to the park on another day, Daisy is presented with a new ball by the owner of the other dog. New friendships develop between both the dogs and the owners. There are three honor books, Me...Jane by Patrick McDonnell, Blackout by John Rocco, and Grandpa Green by Lane Smith.
