As of April 24, 2005, the population of Northbrook was 34,699. For the 2010 Census, Northbrook is striving to reach a count of 35,000 or more, which would make Northbrook eligible to receive funds that are not available to communities with less than 35,000.

The following demographic data is from the U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey, 2006-2008.

Households & Families:
In 2006-2008, there were 12,000 households in Northbrook. The average household size was 2.7 people. Families made up 76% of the households in Northbrook, people living alone made up 22% of households, and the remaining 2% were other nonfamily households.

Nativity & Language:
In 2006-2008, 17% of the people living in Northbrook were foreign born and 83% were native born, including 63% who were born in Illinois. Among people at least five years old, 25% spoke a language other than English at home. Of these, 9% spoke Spanish and 91% spoke another language.

Education:  In 2006-2008, 96% of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school, 65% had a bachelor's degree, and 31% had a graduate or professional degree.

The total school enrollment in Northbrook was 9,100 in 2006-2008. Nursery school and kindergarten enrollment was 1,700 and elementary or high school enrollment was 5,500 children. College or graduate school enrollment was 1,900.

Industries & Occupations:
In 2006-2008, for the employed population 16 years and older, 22% worked in educational services, health care, and social assistance; 18% worked in professional, scientific, management, administrative, and waste management service; and 14% worked in finance, insurance, real estate, and rental and leasing.

59% were in management, professional, and related occupations; 29 % were in sales and office occupations; 5% were in service occupations; 5% were in production, transportation, and material moving occupations; and 2% were in construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations.

80% of the people employed were private wage and salary workers; 10% were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 10% were self-employed.

Income:
The median income of households in Northbrook was $116,680. 80% of the households received earnings, 33% received Social Security, and 18% received retirement income other than Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $20,224. Some households received income from more than one source.

In 2006-2008, 2% of people were in poverty. Of people 65 years old and over, 3% were below the poverty level. Of all families, 1% were below poverty level.

Housing Characteristics:
In 2006-2008, Northbrook had a total of 13,000 housing units, 5 percent of which were vacant. Of these, 85% were single-unit structures and 15% were multi-unit structures. 16% of the housing units were built since 1990. Of occupied housing units, 94% were owner occupied and 6% were renter occupied.
