According to the 2010 United States Census, the population of Northbrook is 33,170. 

The following demographic data is from the 2010 U.S. Census and the American Community Survey, U.S. Census Bureau,  2007-2011.

Households & Families:
In 2010, there were 12,642 households in Northbrook. The average household size was 2.57 people. Families made up 75% of the households in Northbrook, people living alone made up 22% of households, and the remaining 3% were other nonfamily households.

Nativity & Language:
In 2007-2011, 19% of the people living in Northbrook were foreign born and 81% were native born, including 62% who were born in Illinois. Among people at least five years old, 28% spoke a language other than English at home. Of these, 2% spoke Spanish and 98% spoke another language.

Education:  In 2007-2011, 96% of people 25 years and over had at least graduated from high school, 65% had a bachelor's degree, and 31% had a graduate or professional degree.

The total school enrollment in Northbrook was 8,517 in 2007-2011. Nursery school and kindergarten enrollment was 1,292 and elementary through high school enrollment was 7,225 children. College or graduate school enrollment was 1,900.

Industries & Occupations:
In 2007-2011, for the employed population 16 years and older, 23% worked in educational services, health care, and social assistance; 17% worked in professional, scientific, management, administrative, and waste management service; and 15% worked in finance, insurance, real estate, and rental and leasing. The remainder was employed in other lines of work.

59% were in management, professional, and related occupations; 29% were in sales and office occupations; 7% were in service occupations; 3% were in production, transportation, and material moving occupations; and 2% were in construction, extraction, maintenance and repair occupations.

81% of the people employed were private wage and salary workers; 10% were Federal, state, or local government workers; and 9% were self-employed.

Income:
The median income of households in Northbrook for 2007-2011 was $110,902. 79% of the households received earnings, 36% received Social Security, and 20% received retirement income other than Social Security. The average income from Social Security was $21,321. Some households received income from more than one source.

In 2007-2011, 4% of people were in poverty. Of people 65 years old and over, 5% were below the poverty level. Of all families, 3% were below poverty level.

Housing Characteristics:
In 2010, Northbrook had a total of 13,434 housing units, 6 percent of which were vacant.  Of occupied housing units, 89% were owner occupied and 11% were renter occupied.
