PrintPrint

The library has several devices that you can check out for in-library use:

  • Six iPad 4s with retina display and iOS7. Each iPad has 32 GB of memory and comes in its own Smart case. Each iPad has over 90 popular apps.

  • Two MacBook Pros. Each 15” MacBook has 8 GB of DDR3 SDRAM, a 1TB hard drive, and a SuperDrive for CDs/DVDs. Each comes in a carrying case with an adaptor, an AC cord, and an AC plug. Each MacBook Pro has Office for Mac (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Keynote, Pages, Numbers, and Adobe Creative Cloud apps, as well as Audacity, Garage Band, and iMovie. Computer-Aided Design apps include Blender, 123D Design, and SketchUp.

Who Can Check Out?

Northbrook residents, high school or older, with a current Northbrook Public Library card in good standing. Sorry, you may not use another person's card or ID.

Please present a valid, current school ID or state-issued ID. The name, photo, and address on the ID must match the information in your library account. Staff will hold this ID during iPad checkout. One Apple device (iPad or MacBook), per card with ID, may be checked out at a time.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lending Period

  • Devices are lent for up to 3 hours and are checked out at the Periodicals Desk on the Second Floor.
  • Devices are to be returned no later than 15 minutes before closing to a staff person at the Periodicals Desk. Never  return the iPad or MacBook Pro in the book drop or leave it unattended, anywhere.
  • If there are other iPads or MacBooks available, your device may be renewed once for up to 3 hours. Bring the device and your library card to the Periodicals Desk to renew it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fines, Damages, and Care

  • Late return will result in a $5 fee. Fines will continue to be assessed at the rate of $5 per hour (or partial hour) until the iPad or MacBook is returned.
  • Never leave your device and case unattended. You are responsible for the replacement cost of a lost, damaged, or stolen device and/or its case.
  • Replacement fees: iPad Smart case = $37 | iPad = $559 | MacBook case = $25 | MacBook Pro = $2199.  A $5 processing fee per item also is assessed.

How Can I Use the iPad or the MacBook?

Try out any of the approximately 90+ iPad apps that we’ve installed or just surf the Internet. Have a suggestion for an app that you’d like us to add?  Fill out our App Suggestion form on the back of your check-out slip!

Each MacBook comes with standard apps/software, including Garage Band and iMovie.  We've added Audacity and the Adobe Creative Cloud apps, as well; use Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects, Illustrator, or any other of the Creative Cloud apps. At this time, we are not able to provide one-on-one instruction on how to use these apps or the devices.  For assistance, please refer to the brief quick instruction handout we've created, or use the instructional videos on the MacBook’s desktop.

What About Privacy?

  • Be aware that the Library’s Wi-Fi network (nbklibrary) is unsecured. Any information you send could be accessed by others.
  • Any content or data saved to the iPad or MacBook will be permanently erased during the restore process when the device is shut off or returned. As an additional security step, we recommend that you manually sign out from any app or site you have signed in to, and delete any material saved on the device, or save it to a disc, before returning it.
