Going Green with NPL

We are excited to introduce a new film discussion series on environmental topics. Every few months, we will show a documentary followed by a discussion led by members of Go Green Northbrook.

Join us on Monday, November 9 at 7pm in the Auditorium for our premiere event as we watch and discuss Plastic Paradise - a powerful film on the impact of plastic waste in everyday life.

The next Green Scene will be in March on the topic of bees. Check our website next year for updates.

As the days get darker, we turn the lights on earlier and leave them on more each day. Lighting accounts for about a quarter of all electricity consumed in the U.S. Here are some tips from EarthShare to lighten the energy load while keeping your home bright:

  • Replace inefficient incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs. One CFL can last as long as 13 incandescent bulbs and use 75% less energy.
  • Occupancy sensors activate lights when you enter a room and turn them off after you leave. They are good for areas of infrequent use, such as storerooms.
  • Photocells turn lights on and off in response to natural light levels - for example, on at dusk and off at dawn.
  • Dimmers reduce the wattage and output of light bulbs and increase their lifespan.
  • Clean fixtures and lamps regularly by wiping off the dust (make sure the bulb is cool first).
  • Clean or repaint walls. Dirt on surfaces reduces the amount of light they reflect and make the room feel darker.
