Going Green with NPL

Celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day with activities at the Village Green Park in Northbrook on Saturday, April 25.

  • Cleanup volunteers will collect debris and windblown trash and hunt for a hidden sign for a chance to win a prize. Meet at the corner of Shermer and Meadow to register.
  • Recycling drop-off begins at the west side commuter lot by the Northbrook METRA station.
    • Paint
    • Molded styrofoam
    • Tires
    • CFL and fluorescent bulbs
    • Printer cartridges

    • Computers, TVs, electronics
    • Household goods (donated to Goodwill)
    • Onsite document shredding

9:00am to noon:

  • Over 50 exhibitors promoting earth-friendly ideas and concepts to implement in your home or business.
  • Free tree seedlings and a chance to win a tree.
  • Children's activities including pony rides.
  • Music by local performers.
  • Lifesource blood drive - make an appointment at or call 877-543-3768.
  • Don't forget to stop by the library's booth!

Now that spring is finally here, it's time to start planning and preparing your garden. These tips can help you make your garden grow green in an environmentally friendly way.

  • Choose local plants over exotic imports. Native plants provide a better ecosystem for the local bird population and require less water.
  • Set up a rainwater collection barrel to conserve water. The Village Hall sells 55-gallon barrels at a discounted price of $25.
  • Avoid pesticides by using natural alternatives such as coffee grounds and eggshells sprinkled on the soil to repel ants, snails and slugs.
  • Let your grass grow to 3 inches high for deeper, more drought-tolerant roots. Leave the clippings as a natural fertilizer.
  • Leaf blowers produce as much hydrocarbon pollution in 30 minutes as an old car does in a 100-mile trip. Use a rake instead!

Check back next month on Earth Day when we will launch a call for photos of Northbrook gardens, including a prize drawing for a selection of gardening supplies.
