The winner of the 2012 Rebecca Caudill Award was announced today. During the 2011-2012 school year, students in Illinois in grades 4-8 read from a list of twenty nominated titles. In February students voted for their favorite book. This year many different titles topped the favorite lists from the various schools. The votes from all participating schools were counted and the winner is Powerless by Matthew Cody. Marshall Armstrong is the new kid at school. He is different from the other children.  He is pale, eats food in silver wrappers, reads a book at recess, and always wears a hat outside. When Marshall invites the class to his birthday party, children assume because his family doesn't even own a television set that they are in for a boring afternoon. Instead they are in for a surprise when there is a train set to rebuild, a bicycle that can light a bulb, a microscope to use to look at their scars, and a fireman's pole to get from one floor to another. Marshall Armstrong is definitely cool. The next time a new student arrives, students are eager to get to know her. A good book on diversity, try  Marshall Armstrong is New to Our School by David Mackintosh.

If you think that you know the alphabet well, you will be in for a few surprises in  E-mergency! a new book by Tom Lichtenheld & Ezra Fields-Meyer. Early one morning letter E takes a tumble down the stairs and is taken to the hospital. E has to temporarily be replaced. Who else can take his place but another vowel. It is obvious that it has to be the letter O. The letters of the alphabet speak to Congress about replacing E and all of a sudden the letter E disappears from signs all over the country and the letter O is now in that position. Cars no longer go "beep beep." Horns now go "boop boop." People do not eat fries but frios. After much confusion, E recovers and all the letters party while the world returns to normal. E-mergency! is filled with many alphabet gags that children as well as adults will enjoy.
