What is Letter Knowledge?
Letter knowledge is the understanding that letters are different from each other, and that they have different names and sounds. It is important because it helps your child understand that words are made up of smaller parts.
Children first learn to name their ABC’s, then to identify the letters, and then which sound each letter makes.
Sorting and matching games help your child develop the cognitive skills needed to recognize similarities and differences, which will help her to differentiate between different lettters. Teach him the ABCs, and sing the alphabet song as you look at alphabet books. Play with magnetic letters. Make letter shapes out of clay. Choose a letter of the day (or one of the letters in your child's name) and look for it all around you, on signs, books, or labels as you go through your daily routine.
