What is Print Awareness?

What is Print Awareness?

Print Awareness is the understanding that the marks printed on a page contain the story. Noticing print all around us, knowing how to handle a book, and knowing how to follow words on a page are all part of print awareness. Being familiar with printed language helps a child understand how to use books and understand that print carries meaning.

How can I help my child develop print awareness?

To build print awareness, make sure you have books available to your child, and encourage him to explore them. Read to your child every day. Let her turn the pages. Point to the words occasionally as you read. Point out environmental print (signs, menus, billboards, and labels on packages). Help your child to recognize his name in print, the name of a favorite store or restaurant, and so on.
