From Mrs. K's 2nd grade class at Meadowbrook, the pumpkins have arrived for public viewing in Youth Services. For the Literary Pumpkin Assignment, each student chose a book character and turned him/her/it into a pumpkin. These pumpkins are not to be missed and will be on display until the middle of November. We have a great line up of new science programs for the fall. Science Explorers for grades 1-2 combines basic science concepts with hands-on activities. No previous lab experience is necessary, so sign up today for the first two programs in the series. We'll meet on Tuesday, September 4 & October 30, from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in the Youth Services Activity Room.
Mad Scientists for grades 3-5 is a montly program packed with electrifying experiments and science approved fun. Join us for our kickoff program where we will explore the wonders of Kitchen Chemistry. Then come back in October for the disgustingly sophisticated science of Grossology. We'll meet on Sunday, September 30 and October 28 from 2:00-3:00 p.m. in the Youth Services Activity Room. Dress for mess!

Every year the American Library Association chooses a children's book of outstanding literary quality to be awarded the Newbery Medal. At the Mock Newbery Book Discussions participants read 2012 books that have been receiving starred reviews and have a strong chance of winning the medal. If you are in grades 4-7, register at the Youth Services Desk to join us on Wednesday September 12 from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. to discuss the book Kepler's Dream by Juliet Bell. In Kepler's Dream, Ella spends time with her eccentric grandmother in New Mexico while her mother undergoes cancer treatment. Soon Ella becomes involved in solving the disappearance of a rare book from her grandmother's amazing library. Pick up a copy of the book when you register.

Getting ready to go back to school? Stop at the display in the Youth Service Department where bunches of books on the topic are displayed. In one of the books Mr. President Goes to School by Rick Walton, the President is tired of all the problems to be solved. He yearns for a simpler world. Sneaking out of the White House, he returns to Mrs. Appletree's class where he relaxes with finger painting and learns to solve problems only after milk and cookies. See how his problem solving tactics change when he returns to the White House.

Are you a young author or illustrator? Then register today for the Apprentices of the Book Empire, an authors and illustrators Club for grades 2-6. Starting Wednesday, September 12th, bring your finished story or manuscript to be illustrated and peer reviewed. Later, you will illustrate someone else’s story, learn about book design and the publishing process, and have your story published by the library! By the end of this five-week program, your story will be an official library book for others to check out and admire.
This is a five-week registered program on Wednesdays, September 12th - October 10th, from 4-5:00 pm. Call Youth Services at 847.272.4300 to sign up.

Fluffles, Booboo, and Mr. Bear had great fun at the Library last night, after all the people had gone home. They enjoyed stories, a pizza picnic, star jar craft, games, and more fun and wackiness! Dog Days by Jeff Kinney, the fourth book in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series, comes to the movie screen in theatres on Friday August 3rd. Looking for a good laugh, pick up one of the books in the series and read the hilarious diary entries of middle-schooler Greg Heffley. Greg's illustrations in his diary are as comical as the text.
