Book Discussions & Reviews

Jewish Literature Discussions

This summer, the library will present a five part discussion program on the theme "A Mind of Her Own: Fathers and Daughters in a Changing World."

Dr. Benjamin Goluboff, Associate Professor of English at Lake Forest College, will lead the discussions on Tuesdays at 7:00 pm. Copies of the books will be available in Reader Services.

July 15: O My America by Johanna Kaplan

Study Questions for O My America:

Aside from its having a Jewish author, what is Jewish about this novel?

Discuss how the passages of "quoted" material -- the Grandmother's Bintel Brief, Ezra's "Reading Signs" essay, Pearl's piece about being a court interpreter -- contribute to the novel.

By what means does Kaplan create the atmosphere or milieu of the 1930s and 1970s?

In what ways does Ezra's relationship with Merry differ from his relationships with others?

What is the nature of Ezra's character? Is he happy?

What criticisms do you have of this novel?

Upcoming Discussions:
August 12: American Pastoral by Philip Roth
September 16: Bee Season by Myla Goldberg

This series has been made possible through a grant from Nextbook and the American Library Association.
