Internet Access
The library also provides patrons with access to the Internet over our speedy T1 connection. Eighteen terminals are located in the Reference Department.
The library uses an automated computer reservation system, PC Reservation, to ensure equitable access to computer resources for all users. Patrons scan their library card and are assigned a terminal and provided a 4-digit reservation number, good only for that session. A library card is required to make a reservation and must be brought to the library. Any library card from a CCS library or that has been registered at the Northbrook Library can be used to reserve a computer. A library card not in the system can be registered free of charge at the Circulation Desk on the first floor.
If a patron does not have a library card from his or her home library, a Computer Use Only card, good for one year, may be purchased for $5 at the Circulation Desk. This card can not be used to check out or reserve materials. Reservations may only be done in person; the libary no longer reserves computer time over the telephone. If machines are available, patrons may reserve up to two 1-hour sessions a day.
Four 15-minute terminals are located in the Business Reference Area on the second floor for those who do not have a library card and do not wish to buy a computer-use only card. Usage is limited to 15 minutes.
The Youth Services Department also uses PC Reservation. Call 847-272-6224 x250 for more information.
You can also access the Internet in the library using your laptop computer. Ports are located throughout the building to connect you to the Internet using our T1 line. Wireless access is also available throughout the building. Ask at the Periodicals Desk for the equipment and software you will need in order to connect.
Our computer classroom is equipped with a number of terminals for the use of patrons taking our Computer Classes. Call Reference at 847-272-6224 x220 for more information.
