Services for the Visually Impaired

Large Print Books - Thousands of easy-on-the-eye books are located in the Reader Services Department. Click to see a list of new large print books.

Large Print Periodicals - Reader's Digest and the weekly New York Times are available.

Talking Books - People who can't read regular print due to a temporary or permanent disability may qualify for the Talking Books service. Once certified you may borrow audio books and special audio equipment. There is no fee.

Audio Books - Thousands of audio books are housed in the Multimedia Department. We carry both cassette and compact disc audio versions of popular fiction and nonfiction books.

Video Magnifiers - A closed-circuit TV that enlarges print up to 60 times is located in the Reader Services Department. Others are available for home loan.

S.A.R.A. - Scan and Read Aparatus - This device allows the visually impaired to place a book, magazine or other printed material on a scanner and have it read the material back to the listener. It can read a number of languages. Earphones are provided for privacy.


Services for the Homebound

The Books on Wheels Program delivers materials to residents of local retirement and nursing homes. Arrangements can also be made for home delivery on an individual basis for Northbrook residents.

Materials delivered include:

Books (including Large Print) - fiction, thrillers, mysteries, romance & nonfiction.

Large Print Reader's Digest

Bi-Folkal Program Kits - containing slides, cassettes, memorabilia and hands-on items encourage the sharing of memories. They are available for loan to nursing and retirement homes, community organizations and the public.


Services for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

Closed-Captioned Videos - available in our video collection.

TDD - Call 272-6229 for community information and for information about library
resources, programs or services.

Materials - Books, videos and CD-ROMs on sign language.


Services for the Physically Disabled

Wheelchair - Located on the first floor for use in the library.

Catalogs - Equipment, clothing and other items.
