About 1000 Books Before Kindergarten

The goal of the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program is to help your child establish strong literacy skills at an early age, with the library on call to you every step of the way. The concept is simple: just read at least one book to your child each day and keep track of the progress on our fun tally cards. At every 100 books milestone, the library celebrates with a special activity or prize. Then, when your child reaches their goal, we'll throw a graduation celebration for everyone to attend!

Who can enroll?

The program is open to all children—babies, toddlers, and preschoolers—who have not yet entered kindergarten.

How do I sign up and log reading?

1000 Books Before Kindergarten

You can now sign up and log reading entirely online using the READsquared website or app. (The READsquared app is available at the App Store and Goole Play). You can also stop by the library's Youth Services desk to fill out a form. If you'd like, you can also download and print our reading tally sheets to track reading at home.

What counts toward the goal?

Whenever you or someone else reads a book to your child (or your child attends storytimes), you can add it to your reading log. It all adds up!

How long with the program take?

This is a self-paced program, so children can reach their goal in anywhere from a few months to a few years. While reading 1,000 books may sound like a challenge, if you read just one book a night to your child for a year, in three years, your child will have reached 1,095 books! Studies have shown that reading with your child also provides a great opportunity for bonding. Reading together is fun and will create lifelong memories for both of you.

What happens when my child reaches 1,000 Books?

After you log 1000 books, you will receive an email with instructions about how to pick up your free board book to take home. When the library returns to in-person programming, we will also invite all children who have reached their goal to an annual Graduation Party to celebrate their success. Parents and siblings will be invited, too!

Need more books to read to your child?

Fill out a Five Fresh Reads request and we'll email you personalized book suggestions your child will be sure to love.

Musical Milestones!

For every 100 books logged, you'll get a special celebration in your email—a children’s song performed by a professional musician from the Chicago area for you and your child to enjoy! Complete the program and you will have a little music library just for your child. Physical prizes (photo book,1000 Books bookbags, board book, stickers) can still be collected at the library at your convenience. Click here for a sneak peek.
