Library Appoints Two New Trustees to Board

After interviewing a sizable number of candidates to fill open positions, the Northbrook Public Library’s Board of Trustees is pleased to announce their selection of Ms. Jami Xu and Ms. Abby Young. Ms. Xu and Ms. Young were formally voted into their new posts at the Board’s August 18 meeting.

"The board received 20 applicants for the trustee vacancies. The response shows how focused Northbrook is on community resources like the Library and also on people's willingness to serve,” said Executive Director Kate Hall. “I know it was a difficult decision because we had so many qualified applicants that all cared about the Library.”

Ms. Xu and Ms. Young will fill the open positions left by departing trustees Ms. Vera Mayer and Ms. Daphna Neirick. Ms. Mayer had been on the Library Board for more than twenty years and participated in the decisions that lead to two of the Library’s major construction projects. She will remain close to the Library as Chair of the Library Foundation. Ms. Neirick had been on the Library board since September 2012. Both trustees left the Board for personal reasons.

“Vera and Daphna will be missed for their contributions to the Board and the Library,” said Mr. Carlos Frum, President of the Board of Trustees. “They are both very thoughtful individuals and are easy to work with.”

Ms. Young has lived in Northbrook for 21 years, and currently works in Kimberly-Clark’s IT department. She has a Master’s degree in Information Technology from Northwestern University. Ms. Xu was born and raised in China before coming to the US in the late ‘90s. She works in strategy and analytics for a financial service company, and has two children, aged seven and five.

“I see this as a rewarding opportunity to give back to the Northbrook community that my family has considered home for the past seven years,” said Xu. “I look forward to working with the wonderful library board members, director, and staff. They are so passionate and knowledgeable.”

The next Board of Trustees meeting will be held on Thursday, September 15.
