A Message from the Executive Director: We Do Not Tolerate Racism

Northbrook Public Library holds inclusion as one of its core values and stands in solidarity with all who are seeking an end to the systemic racism in our community, country, and the world.  We have no tolerance for racism at the library.  We are horrified and sickened at the murder of George Floyd and the ongoing injustices experienced by Black Americans.

Here are actions we have taken and are continuing to take to support our Black community members and foster an environment where we can have challenging conversations in a safe space:

  • Support and listen to members of our Black community
  • Foster dialogue and civic engagement to provide members of our Black community with a place to speak and give others opportunities to learn and become better allies
  • Recommend resources to help people learn more about systemic racism and oppression
  • Provide access to a diverse collection that represents the diversity of our community and the wider world
  • Offer programs that represent the diversity of our community and the world in which we live

The library is committed to doing our part to listen and learn and help end the systemic racism that plagues our nation and hope that our community members will stand with us to do the same.

If you would like to delve deeper into the topics of race and racism in America, our librarians have put together this curated list of resources to help you navigate the topics from different perspectives and for different reading levels.
