Northbrook Native Author to be Featured at Library Event

On Thursday, October 1, Northbrook native Robert Kurson will take the stage at the Northbrook Public Library auditorium for the second installment of Evening with the Author, where he will read a selection of his work, engage with the audience, and sign copies of his books.

Kurson is best known for his 2004 bestselling book, Shadow Divers, the true story of two Americans who discover a sunken WWII U-boat off the coast of New Jersey. Shadow Divers won the Book Sense Book of the Year Award for Adult Nonfiction in 2005. Pirate Hunters, Kurson’s latest book, was released in June 2015 and tells the story of two legendary shipwreck divers as they navigate the dangerous Caribbean waters in search of a fabled pirate ship and its elusive captain.

“The adventures he writes about are extremely fascinating,” said librarian Mike Hominick. “Even if people haven’t read his books, they will want to hear these stories.”

Kurson’s professional writing career began at the Chicago Sun-Times, where he quickly gained a full-time features writing job. In 2000, Esquire published “My Favorite Teacher,” Kurson’s first magazine story, which became a finalist for a National Magazine Award. He moved from the Sun-Times to Chicago magazine, then to Esquire, where was a contributing editor for years. His stories have appeared in Rolling Stone, The New York Times Magazine, and other publications.

“[Kurson]’s writing is very compelling,” said Hominick. “We’re eager to see him return to Northbrook to share his work with the community.”
Each Evening with the Author event is free and open to the public. Copies of the author’s books are available for purchase at each event, courtesy of The Book Bin.
