Acclaimed Authors Host Writing Workshops at Northbrook Library

The Northbrook Public Library is thrilled to announce the debut of Northbrook Writes, a series of free writing workshops led by talented published authors. The first workshop will be held on Thursday, September 22, followed by six workshops held on weekends in October.

“We know there are a lot of people in the area who are interested in writing a novel, and we had a really good turnout for National Novel Writing Month last November,” said librarian Mike Hominick, who organized Northbrook Writes. “We wanted to expand the program so people could be prepared before they start writing their novel.”

Northbrook Writes workshops cover key aspects of writing a novel, such as creating the setting, writing engaging dialogue, and developing characters. Each workshop instructor is an expert author with teaching experience at a renowned institution. Many of the instructors have won awards for their writing. Three of the Northbrook Writes instructors—Christine Sneed, Abby Geni, and Rebecca Makkai—have been showcased in the Library’s Evening with the Author series.

“It was important to us to get traditionally-published authors who were either instructors or professors at a prestigious college or university,” said Hominick. “To learn from these instructors, you’d have to pay for a college class or writing workshop, which would be expensive. But with [Northbrook Writes], you can learn from accomplished authors for free.”

Registration is required for all Northbrook Writes workshops. To see the full workshop lineup, learn more about Northbrook Writes instructors, or sign up for workshops, please visit www.northbrook.info/northbrook-writes or call 847-272-2958.
