Need to edit your movie? Create a podcast? Photoshop your pictures? Stop by the Digital Media Lab on the second floor in the Reference area.

What is the Digital Media Lab?

The Digital Media Lab is a small space outfitted with hardware and software designed to help users create and edit digital recordings (audio, movie, images, etc.).

What can users create or edit in the DML?

Movies, spoken word audio recordings, images, photos, and more. Users can also scan photos and slides.

What about audio or musical recordings?

While users are welcome to make spoken word audio recordings (e.g. podcasts, interviews), the space is not designed for musical recordings or vocal performances. Use headphones when editing audio recordings or recordings involving audio. Please note: the room has sound absorbing tiles to improve sound quality in the room; the room is NOT “sound-proof”, so sound can bleed out.

Who can use the DML?

You only need a library card to use the DML. If you don't have a Northbrook Library card, you can stop at the first floor checkout desk with your library card from your home library and an ID and register your card with us. Registration is free and easy. If you don't have a library card at all and you're not a Northbrook resident, you can stop at the Reference Desk and pick up a guest pass.

How do I sign up?

Just bring your library card (or guest pass) to the DML and log in. You can reserve a spot by calling the Reference Department at 847-272-4873 and asking to reserve the DML. Have your library card handy to place your reservation.

How long can I use it?

Reservations are for 3 hours. If another patron is waiting, you will need to vacate the room after your reservation.
