Checkout Policies & Limits

  • Northbrook Library cardholders can borrow up to 150 items. (Some items, such as movies and video games, have additional checkout limits.) If you have a library card from another library, you can check out up to 50 total items.
  • We do not charge fines for overdue items. However, due dates still apply. Learn more about due dates.
  • New and Lucky Day films can be checked out for 1 week. Most other items may be checked out for 3 weeks and are eligible for 3 automatic renewals unless a hold has been placed on the item.
  • For their first three months in the collection, holds on new items (excluding Lucky Day materials, which are browse-only) are only available to Northbrook Library cardholders.
  • Library of Things items can only be checked out by Northbrook Library cardholders. Most of these items may be checked out for one week. Library of Things items cannot be renewed.
  • Downloadable materials from Libby, Hoopla, Kanopy, etc., are limited to Northbrook Library cardholders and have borrowing limits.

The maximum number of items you can check out with a Northbrook Library card or a reciprocal library card varies by material type.

Northbrook Public Library cardholders

  • Total Items (including books): 150
  • CDs: Up to 50
  • Movies: Up to 50
  • Video Games: Up to 10
  • Kits: Up to 3
  • Library of Things items: Up to 3

Reciprocal cardholders

  • Total Items (including books): Up to 50
  • CDs: Up to 25
  • Movies: Up to 25
  • Video Games: Up to 5
  • Kits: 1
  • Library of Things items: 0
